A home for aged persons in need of care, embracing all races and religions, who lack a place to go and anyone to care for.
The birth of Dev Siri Sevana was the brainchild of the late Rev. Padmasiri Bhareti, an Anglican priest and vicar of St. Paul’s Church Milagiriya who had a vision of a ministry within his ministry. The need for a secure shelter for the increasingly aged population in the country of whom the majority lived below the poverty line stirred up the vision for the establishment of Dev Siri Sevana.
Rev. Padmasiri Bhareti was born on the 10th of April 1930. His parents were Mr. Aelian & Mrs. Evelyn Bhareti. Little Padmasiri Bhareti began his primary education at St. John’s College, Panadura. He later attended Pembrooke Academy, where he passed the London Matriculation in 1947 along with the Inter-science examination. He began his career at the Meteorological Department in Colombo. In 1969, after completing 17 years of service in the Government Department, he answered the call to the ministry of the Anglican Church. He entered the ministry as a family person, having wed Ms. Noeline Fernando in 1958, and they were blessed with three children.
Rev. Bhareti envisioned that God was calling him to a unique ministry within the Ministry. He knew he wasn’t merely destined to be a parish priest, as many might aspire to be. He believed that God was calling him to work among the underprivileged – a divine command he received. He was guided by the vision, “Wherever God’s servants work, HIS church grows!” Bearing this noble thought in mind, Rev. Bhareti completed a short course in theology at the Divinity School of Colombo. His first pastoral assignment was at the Holy Emmanuel Church, Moratuwa. Later, he was directed to the mission field of Baddegama in the south of the country. Rt. Rev. Cyril Abeynaike who then was the Bishop commissioned him that this village was to become his parish. As Rev Bhareti began to sow seeds of love within the community, his vision proved true.
He continued his ministry at Kotte and then at Laxapathiya before moving to St. Paul’s Church in Milagiriya. The words “Go out and serve” resonated within him, igniting his desire to make a remarkable impact in many more lives. He felt the need to look beyond his duties and expand his focus on a burning issue in society. He sensed that there were other avenues of shepherding to shower God’s Love. As his pastoral term came to an end, he sought land to fulfil his mission and discovered an acre of suitable land in Welisara, which belonged to the Diocese. Forming a committee from the parishes where he had served, Rev. Bhareti obtained permission from the Bishop to establish a Home for the elders that would cater to the aged regardless of their backgrounds. His vision was that ‘CARE’ at this Home would be provided free of charge and would transcend race and religion. The Bishop, who wholeheartedly embraced the idea, conveyed, “ATTEMPT GREAT THINGS FOR GOD, EXPECT GREAT THINGS FROM GOD.”
Thus this statement became the motto for this divine ministry and the journey of Dev Siri Sevana began.
